A 1600 s.f. addition and complete renovation to a Cape Cod style home for a family of four.
The addition provides a living room, sunroom, larger kitchen adjoining a breakfast room and family room. The second floor incorporates two bedrooms, a guest bedroom/home office, new bathroom, and master bedroom suite.
The clients decision to remain in a neighborhood populated by modest homes, led to the preservation and renovation of the exterior front facade. All new windows, siding, roofing and masonry chimney were installed. The rear addition is dealt with in a contextual manner creating smaller volumes, sympathetic to the existing structure and neighboring homes, and providing an intimate garden setting.
A strong dialogue was developed with the client, who has a background in design and offered much input with regards to finishes. These include recycled glass tiles and tumbled slate in the front entry, quartzite and glass in the bath, and end grain butcher block in the kitchen. Stainless steel woven mesh panels and ribbed glass were incorporated into the kitchen cabinets as well. Custom built-ins including a media cabinet and separate CD storage unit in the family room, bookcases in the sunroom, display cabinetry and a new mantel in the living room, and mahogany master bathroom cabinets were designed as well. | | | Location | Evanston, Illinois | | Design | 2000 | | Construction | 2000-2001 | | Design Principal | Ann F.
