This 3,600 s.f. four bedroom, 3½ bath single family residence is a complete renovation of and addition to an existing masonry two flat. The character of the front elevation was maintained by opening up the original masonry window openings which has been partially filled in order to capture more natural light. Limestone accents were added at the cornice and entry surround to replace damaged masonry caused by years of neglect. A custom designed steel canopy and an open rail metal stair with limestone treads were added as lighter visual elements to complement the weight of the solid masonry façade. Interior features for this project, include custom designed staircase with painted and stained oak handrail, natural cherry hardwood kitchen cabinetry with granite countertops. The new stairway features a skylight above and custom designed stained glass windows. All windows were replaced, and where feasible, in the original window openings. All existing building systems were replaced to complete a project that functions like a new house while maintaining the look of the existing structure. | | | Location | Chicago, Illinois | | Design | 1997 | | Construction | 1998 | | Design Principal | Peter Nicholas | | Project Architect | Lane Zabala | | General Contractor | Illinois Home Improvement | | Photography | Linda Oyama Bryan | | | | | | | | | | | | |
